AN HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY
The Washington State electorate in the Eighth Congressional District has the opportunity to lead the nation in 2008 We can re-focus the course of political events to again champion the principle embodied in the US Constitution, namely, the balance of power between the three distinct branches of government.
Factions develop within the body politic from a variety of human and natural causes. James Madison identified factions as the primary cause of the demise of democracies. The establishment of a representative form of government, a Republic, was chosen by the Framers of our Constitution with a view to limiting the ability of factions to tear the fabric of constitutional government.
This principle was sadly overlooked when, with our help and through our sacrifice of blood and treasure, the Iraqi people were handed a constitution to ratify which turned out to be a parliamentary monstrosity.
The sectarian civil war in Iraq between the Shea and Sunni Islamic factions is mirrored in the conflict which we witness on a daily basis involving the two major political factions in the US. The Union, which the Framers of our Constitution worked mightily to create, and which was the underlying issue in the US Civil War, is now again being severely tested.
The two major political factions (also called parties) are intent upon controlling both the executive and legislative branches of government. The lust for power has obviously blinded these two factions from acknowledging the Constitutional provision for a division of governmental authority.
The Framers of our Constitution had each been actively engaged in our War of Independence and were intent on establishing a government which avoided the trappings of monarchy. Their experiences of life under George the Third were still a raw and painful memory. It was therefore an important feature of our new Constitution to insure that the legislature (Congress) has the lion's share of authority within the Halls of Government.
Article 1 Section 8 of our Constitution defines the powers of Congress, one of which is to declare war. There is no provision that permits Congress to side-step that responsibility and pass this decision to declare war to the executive. The Iraq War is not George Bush's War, it is our war. We, the People through our representatives establish the course of our nation. Unfortunately we have permitted the two rival political factions to tear at the strength of our Union, creating red states and blue states.
The electorate in the Eighth District has an opportunity to send an Independent representative to Congress. It will reestablish a constitutional principle of representational government (as opposed to rule by faction) and will insure that the interests of the electorate are served.
Independent (or swing) voters now exceed the number of staunch adherents to each major political faction. Campaign funding can now be provided via the Internet by contributions from individuals. The ability of the major political factions to control campaign funding is now relegated to the ash heap of history.
Let us not allow this precious moment in the effort to press forward the frontiers of representative government to pass us by. VOTE FOR YOUR INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE FOR CONGRESS.
